The Hong Kong prize awards shine a spotlight on the genuine spirit of charity and civic awareness of ordinary yet exemplary citizens. It honours their inspiring stories in overcoming personal challenges, community contribution, acts of self-sacrifice, innovating for good and tenacious entrepreneurship. The award winners are celebrated on the pages of the South China Morning Post.
The first prize of the Hong Kong Prize is a grant of up to HK$100 million which can be used for a variety of projects to support the social and economic development of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR). The second prize of up to HK$20 million is designed to help Hong Kong become a global hub for innovation, technology and talent. The third prize of up to HK$10 million is intended for the development of the Hong Kong film industry.
In addition to the above, the Prize has also established a Scholarship Fund for Postgraduate Students, the amount of which is determined by the Advisory Committee. The Scholarship Fund is to be used for the benefit of research postgraduate students in the Department of History, CUHK.
It is expected that the Scholarship Fund will be increased to more than HK$15 million in the near future, in order to meet the growing needs. In case there is insufficient funding to provide the Scholarship Fund, the Advisory Committee may decide to reduce the value of the Prize or the Scholarship Fund.
The Shaw Prize is one of the most prestigious international prizes in science. It was created by a donation from Professor Wang Gungwu, who was a vice-chancellor of The University of Hong Kong and was responsible for the re-establishment of the Department of History after World War II.
