Roulette is a casino game that offers glamour, mystery and excitement to players around the world. Its rules are simple to learn, but it provides a surprising level of depth for those who play seriously.
In this article we will cover all the basics of Roullete so that you can get started playing this great game immediately. We’ll cover the different bet types, their odds and payouts. We’ll also show you the best way to place your chips on the table so that you can maximize your chances of winning big.
The Roulette Wheel
A standard casino roulette wheel is a solid wooden disk, slightly convex in shape. It has 36 numbered slots, alternately colored red and black. There is also a 0 and a 00 on some American wheels. The croupier spins the wheel and a ball bounces around the inside edge of the bowl until it stops in one of the slots, marking a number on the table.
The Dealer then clears the table of losing wagers and pays all winners. Once this has happened, the croupier will announce, “No more bets!” and the players can no longer place their chips. The ball is then thrown into the spinning wheel and the players watch as it bounces around the track and eventually settles into a pocket marked with a specific number.
Outside Bets
The odds of winning an outside bet are better than the odds of winning a straight up bet, but still lower than those of other even-money bets such as the Dozens Bet, the Line Bet or the Corner Bet. This is because the house gets its edge by having a 0 and a 00, which don’t count for these bets.
This bet consists of placing your chip(s) in one of the three groups on the layout, namely the first 12, second 12 or third 12. If the ball wins, you win the same amount as if it had landed on any other number in these groups, and you’ll receive 2-1.
The High or Low Bet is called passe et manque in French, and it’s a bet that the ball will land on either the first 18 numbers (1-18) or the last 18 numbers (19-36). If the 0 or 00 comes up, you lose this bet. This is another even-money bet, and its payout is 1-1.
This bet consists of placing your chip(s) to straddle the line between two numbers on the layout. This is also known as a street bet, a three-number bet or the Trio. If the ball lands on this bet, you’ll get 17-1.
